Frequently Asked Questions

Why Buy Laminate Flooring?

Some of the qualities are that it is hard wearing, durable, scratch resistant, non-slip, and easy to care for. It is available in a wide variety of designs and colours, so you can find the perfect look for your home. It is also the perfect surface for areas where spills occur so is ideal for pet owners and families with small children. Laminate flooring is versatile and stylish. Because of the nature of manufacture it can be made to look like any natural material which gives you a great choice when decorating a room.

Is Laminate Flooring Cheaper Than Carpet?

As with everything it depends on quality but in general, you can get a higher quality finish at a lower price with laminate flooring. Laminate can be bought for as little as £8.99m² which compares to some of the cheaper carpets you can buy. It depends on thickness of course, but even the most expensive laminate is only £29.99m² and carpet can be much more expensive than that, especially when you consider the thicker underlay that you need, the gripper rods and tape.

Is Laminate Flooring Better Than Vinyl?

When it comes to appearance, laminate flooring wins hands down. If you study a laminate floor it is very difficult to tell the difference from real wood, such has been the leap in manufacturing methods over the years. The top layer can be textured to look exactly the same as a wood grain or ceramic tile. This three dimensional finish is embossed into the surface and once combined with the heavy fibreboard core, it does feel like you are walking on the real thing. Both have similar lifespan, but laminate, with its click and lock method of fitting is heavier and feels more solid.

Is Underfloor Heating Compatible with Laminate Flooring?

Yes, underfloor heating can be used with laminate flooring, in fact it is the perfect choice. Laminate is more resistant to temperature change than wood and will not change shape or warp when laid over underfloor heating. Both electric and water fed (wet) heating systems are compatible and can be used. The recommended maximum temperature is around 27° - most makes come with a floor sensor so you can monitor the temperature.

Can Laminate Flooring Be Repaired?

Firstly, laminate is a hard wearing material, but just like any other floor it can become damaged. It maybe that a heavy tool or other item is dropped on to the surface. If this happens then there is no need to worry. There are plenty of laminate repair kits available which will provide an invisible repair if required.

Which Laminate Flooring Is Best?

This really is a question of personal choice, what room you are installing the flooring in, and your décor and colour scheme. For high traffic living areas we would suggest you use a thicker laminate such as the 12mm laminate. There may also be specific reasons such as using it in a room where there may high moistures. If you are looking for a high quality modern look then it's hard to beat the look of herringbone laminate flooring!

Is Laminate Flooring Safe For The Environment?

Laminate flooring is the eco-friendly choice. Floating floors like this are easy to assemble and take up, protecting the flooring underneath. This means they can take up a new life in a new room or different premises. When they come to the end of their life they can be disposed of in a environmentally safe way, by grounding up, used as fuel or composting.

Can Laminate Flooring Be Re-used in Another Room?

Yes, in almost all cases laminate is installed as a floating floor, so if it is carefully lifted up, then it can be set to one side, plank by plank, and re-used in another room. You also may be able to re-use the underlay if it still has some life in it. It really depends how long it has been down.

Is Laminate Flooring Fashionable?

There are so many designs and finishes to choose from that you are bound to find a suitable colour and finish for your project. With interior design turning to a more natural look, with soft beiges and tans coming to the fore, the natural appearance of laminate is very much in fashion.

Are Laminate Floors Healthier Than carpet?

Countries in Continental Europe have always considered carpet unhygienic. Laminate flooring offers an easy to clean alternative that doesn't attract dirt, dust and bacteria deep into the weave like carpet does. As such, it is the perfect solution for people with allergies and other sensitivities.

Is Laminate Flooring Pet-Proof?

There was an explosion in pet ownership during the pandemic and according to UKpetfood 36% of UK homes now own a dog, and 29% a cat. Some homes have both of course! Laminate flooring is pet-friendly and pet proof. It has a tough surface layer that is scratch resistant, so your pet will not harm the floor. Similarly, no nasty chemicals are going to leak into a room to harm your pet. Carpets can harbour dirt and bacteria viruses within the pile, while laminate presents a clean hard surface that can be cleaned easily.

Is Laminate Flooring Good For People With Allergies?

Yes - the joins of laminate flooring, if well-laid, are close together and do not collect dirt, dust, pollen or other kinds of allergens. They are simply blown away or swept when cleaned. As such, there is no accumulation in the room where it is laid, making this type of flooring perfect for those of us with allergies.

About Laminate Flooring

How Is Laminate Flooring Made?

It is made in an elaborate manufacturing process where four layers are fused together. using a high pressure lamination process. The central core, the part which provides the weight, is made from high-density fibreboard (HDF). This is fused to a backing layer that stabilizes the board and keeps it straight. On the top is a decorative appliqué layer which is applied to provide the design. This is then topped of with a protective layer which provides the surface. This protects and seals the board from everyday use and wear.

Who Invented Laminate Flooring?

The story is a convoluted one, and even Wikipedia lacks detail, but the lamination process has been around since the late nineteenth century. The first materials were created by a Swedish company called Stensmölla Kemiska Tekniska Industri whose subsidiary Perstop Industrial Group started making radios with the material in 1923. Fast forward to 1977 and they developed high pressure laminate (HPL) further and by '79, they had created the first laminate flooring. In the late '80's the first direct pressure laminate (DPL) was created which used a cheaper process, Between 1990 and the early 2000s various textures were added, making laminate flooring much more versatile. From using scrap wood, glues, resins and high pressure to the sophisticated processes used today, it's been something of a journey!
